We had decided to go ahead and come for Christmas as well, unfortunately, we weren't able to see him for Christmas.
Keith and I received a phone call late night on November 30th and shortly after received the final call stating he had passed.
Keith and Popeye were extremely close with another. I have to say that Popeye had a great relationship with all of his grandchildren, but Keith was extremely fond of Popeye for many reasons. Not only was Popeye a wonderful man, but he was a great father figure to him. Popeye attended all of his games, recitals, ceremonies, . . . . you name it, he was there.
Popeye is greatly missed. You can read his obituary HERE:
Keith and I were able to fly into Amarillo the next day while the kids stayed with our good friends. It's such a shame that the only reasons that families seem to get together are for weddings and funerals, but what a blessing it was to see all those gathered to celebrate Popeye's life.
The ceremony was beautiful. He had retired as assistant chief of police and the Amarillo Police Department brought officers as honorary pall bearers and even presented Tutu with a state flag.
